Urine is a waste product that contains substances that can harm the body’s cells. The bladder wall is normally protected from the urine by a layer knows as glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs. In IC/PBS, the GAG layer becomes thin and defective which then exposes the bladder wall to urine, causing an inflammatory reaction. This results in symptoms of IC/PBS such as frequency and pain.
